Moscow concerned about EU sanctions against Belarus, Iran, Syria

MOSCOW, 13 October (BelTA) – Moscow is concerned about the decision of the European Union to extend unilateral sanctions against Belarus and Iran and a threat to reinforce sanctions against Syria in defiance of the UN Security Council's resolutions, official representative of the Foreign Ministry of Russia Alexander Lukashevich told reporters on 13 October, BelTA has learnt.

He emphasized that Russia "cannot but be worried about the regular use of unilateral punitive measures as an instrument of the EU diplomacy."

"The practice shows that the use of sanctions in defiance of the UN Security Council rarely leads to the desired result, instead, it makes the settlement of disputes more difficult and has a most negative impact on the political and socioeconomic situation in the countries and regions targeted by sanctions," Alexander Lukashevich said.
